Tesla India news, Tesla India plans: Amid ambiguity over Tesla India launch, Elon Musk-led Tesla’s India manufacturing plans seem to be gaining momentum. EV giant Tesla’s executives are in India to meet PM Narendra Modi to explore the incentives the Indian government is willing to offer for setting up a Tesla India plant. In fact, according to a Reuters report, Tesla execs already met officials from PM Modi’s office and other ministries on Wednesday in order to push for Tesla India manufacturing plans.

Tesla is reportedly planning to set up a factory in India for domestic Tesla car sales in India and for exports of Tesla cars. The reports may be viewed against the backdrop that India had previously refused Tesla’s request to reduce import tax on cars. While the Indian government was keen that Tesla Inc should build the Tesla cars in India, the EV car-making giant was keen on testing the Indian market before making an entry.

The location of the Tesla factory in India (Tesla India manufacturing plant) has not been disclosed. After meeting PMO, Tesla India executives are also likely to meet Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Tesla’s renewed push to enter the Indian market comes a year after the Elon Musk-led company put its plans on hold due to its inability to reduce import taxes on vehicles. The reported meeting of Tesla officials with PM Narendra Modi also comes ahead of the PM’s US visit in June.

If reports are to be believed, Tesla’s plans to hire a local team and set up a Tesla India office were also shelved after the company hit a dead wall last year on the import tax front.
