In India, most festivals follow the Moon cycle. One exception to this rule is Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated based on the Sun’s position and therefore falls roughly on the same day every year. It falls during the winter season and thus we enjoy the traditional recipes of sesame and jaggery to help our body sail through the season. But, make no mistake, the festival has an immense astronomical significance as well.
