Assam will soon have a Rs 25,000 crore semiconductor packaging plant, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on February 15. Chandrasekhar, who was addressing a Digital India Future Skills summit in Guwahati, said, “Assam is soon going to have a Rs 25,000 crore semiconductor packaging plant. It is proposal from Tata that had to be evaluated…”

Earlier, it was reported that Tata Group was planning to set up a semiconductor processing plant at an investment of Rs 40,000 crore. The report says Tata Electronics had submitted the application for setting up an electronic centre at Jagiroad, which is about 55 km from Guwahati.

Assam CM Himanta Sarma had said the Tata Group held initial talks with his government about the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant, and after that had approached Centre for necessary permissions.

“If all goes well, we will see a major investment in the state, which will create a positive environment for industrialisation. We are in touch with the Centre and hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two,” he had told news agency PTI.
